Try On A Smile

I have been thinking about this one for a few weeks now and finally have gotten around to writing about it. We have all had what I am about to write about happen to us. Some of us may even be guilty of inflicting others…..my purpose in writing this blog is not to bash anyone, I am hoping it will prompt us all (me included) to think twice before doing. Ok, now let me get specific. Through the years I have watched something very important deteriorate…. common courtesy. Being from the South I have grown very fond of politeness and common courtesy. I was raised with manners, they were instilled in me. I appreciate them. I try my hardest to use my manners and be polite to everyone even when it is not returned.  I have traveled all over and without saying names I have been to states and countries filled with people whom had never been taught said important skills and others that would out even the South to shame. What has become blazingly apparent is that in cities, states, and countries that practice politeness and such…..are without question happier people.

Seems easy enough so why isn’t everyone simply put, pleasant to one another? It is so simple to smile at someone, say please and thank you, hold a door for the person behind you, think about others and how they may feel before you sea or act on their behalf. Selflishness has clearly taken over and we (in general) are a “mine mine mine” and “me me me” society. The trouble with that is people are ALWAYS irritable because we were not meant to function alone. we live in a Society….. Definition: humankind, people not human and person. No one wants to be around nasty rude insensitive cranky people. I am not sure where it started but we need to end it and you can help.

Next time you accidentally bump into someone, apologize. Then compliment them on something. Who cares if they look at you like you are nuts, just smile and walk away. Eventually the smug and seemingly stoic individual will give in and smile back if enough people are willing to start. I am personally tired of all the grumpy (or apparently so) peeps wondering around with a chip on their shoulder. We all have bad days, I certainly understand that, but seriously try and make an effort to brighten someone elses day with out expectation of any return and see if your days don’t get brighter. I’m just saying, I believe it works. It may take 10 smiles or kind words to strangers to get a smile back but when you do…… it’s so worth the tiny effort to be a light in someones day:)
